Dr. Kathleen Hartford
Biography, Part I:
A 1978 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Kathleen Hartford began her career in the corporate world as a Technical Affairs manager for a Fortune 500 Corporation on the east coast. Shortly thereafter Dr. Hartford injured her back in a minor fender-bender. She tried traditional medical approaches to back pain, but to no avail. She then turned to Chiropractic care. The relief was so instant and complete that she left corporate America to learn more about the treatment that gave her a new lease on life.
After graduating from the Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic, she practiced in the Republic of South Africa with her husband, Dr. Gordon Rixon. During their five years in Capetown they built one of the largest and most successful practices in Africa. She also served on the Health for Africa Board, presented the benefits of Chiropractic at the world renowned University of Capetown Medical School, and conducted seminars at the various hospitals throughout South Africa. In conjunction with these activities, Dr. Hartford served as a consultant for the two largest health and fitness centers in Capetown, working with top endurance athletes in the areas of triathlons, marathons, cycling, rugby and soccer.
Drs. Hartford and Rixon returned to the Pittsburgh area in 1990 to give birth to their daughter, Khalehla, and opened Harrison Hills Chiropractic Health Center, which has evolved into the Health Pyramid Longevity and Vitality Center.
In April of 1994 Dr. Rixon was critically injured in a private plane crash. He sustained a closed head injury and lay in a coma for 10 days. During that long 10 day period, Dr. Rixon's near fatal injuries created swelling of the brain, putting him at risk for brain damage. Dr. Hartford credited medicine for saving her husband's life but quickly realized that his potential for a full recovery and return to a productive life did not lie solely in the hands of medicine. She was committed to returning her husband to the quality of life he had had before the accident. During their quest, Dr. Hartford was blessed in finding techniques and practices that accomplished things modern medicine said were impossible. These same techniques are now utilized as part of the integrated wellness approach at Health Pyramid.
